Shirodhara

The term Shirodhara is derived from the two Sanskrit words: shiro, meaning head, and dhara, meaning toflow. It involves the warm and consistent flow of aromatic oils on the forehead, specifically on the “third eye.” This is the chakra point just above and between the eyebrows and is said to be the seat of human consciousness. The oils flow over the scalp and through the hair, creating a blissful sensation.

Udvartana

Use of powder made of herbs in body massage is called Udvarthanam. The word "Udvartana" refers to elevation, upward strokes during massage. This massage helps to reduce cellulite in the body. Udvartana involves the application of dry powdered herbs on the body that is anointed with oil. This is done with some pressure. Udgarshana and utsadana are the variants of udvartana. Udgarshana is done without subjecting the individual to abhyanga. Udsadana is similar to udgarshana except that oil is used along with paste of herbs. These procedures are employed for treatment purposes too. Udvartana is practiced in opposite direction of abhyanga (against the direction of body hairs). Udvartana is routinely done with powders of horsegram for cold seasons and for those with kapha body type, lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) for those with pitta body type, vacha (Acorus calamus) in case of vata body type. Others like flour of greengram, chick pea are also used.

Janu Basti

The term ‘janu’ denotes ‘janu sandhi’ meaning knee joint and ‘basti’ meaning to reside to abide or to retain. This means janu basti is a procedure done on knee joint where medicine is made to retain over the knee for a prescribed time. This procedure comes under Baahyasamana Chikitsa (External therapy). On the basis of mode of application Baahyasamana procedures are of different types such as 1. Abyanga which means massaging 2. Sekam or Dhara meaning pouring type 3. Pichu or Aalepa meaning just application type 4. Basti/kabala/ Gandoosha where medicine is retained

Kati Basti

Kati Basti as the hot oil therapy is mainly administered as part of panchakarma treatment in Ayurvedic health care facilities. Panchakarma is the detoxification process for removing the toxic substances from the body and Kati Basti like several other massage therapies and hot oil therapies works for preparing the body for the Panchakarma to take better effect.In Kati Basti dough is prepared by the Ayurvedic therapist for retaining the warm medicated oil on the body surface and then this dough is shaped like a small circular dam with a hollow between to retain the medicated oil poured within it. After placing the dough in the Koti position medicated Ayurvedic oil is poured in warm temperature in the hollow of the dam created by the circumference of dough. Then according to the practitioner's guidance the oil is retained for as long as half an hour to 45 minutes, depending upon the patient's clinical condition. There is a wide array of health benefits of medicated Kati Basti including better blood circulation, better bowl movement for providing relief from constipation, relief from muscular and skeletal pain in the back or lower portion of the body, developing ability to make body movement with better agility and flexibility and many more.

Chromotherapy

Chromotherapy is a method of treatment that uses the visible spectrum (colors) of electromagnetic radiation to cure diseases. It is a centuries-old concept used successfully over the years to cure various diseases. Chromotherapy is used for a variety of conditions including depression, anxiety, stress, fatigue, pain, cramps, headache, migraine headache, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, cough, and many other conditions.Chromotherapy is a therapeutic science which has been used by many races for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians used specially built solarium rooms with different colored glasses. The sun would shine through the colored glass onto the patient to achieve specific therapeutic benefits. Others used different colored silk clothes to filter varying shades of light onto their bodies. There is also evidence of others using colored waters and colored gels to achieve the same results.Chromotherapy practitioners believe that color can be used to correct energy imbalances which are the cause of disease. A chromotherapist applies specific colors or lights to specific points on the body called “chakras.” Different colors have different effects. For example, red is thought to increase pulse rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Therefore, it is often used for circulatory conditions. Blue is believed to cause relaxation and calm. Therefore, blue is used for headaches, pain, cramping, stress, and other conditions. There is no reliable scientific support for these beliefs.

Swedana

Swedana is a steam treatment explained in Ayurvedic medical science. The word Sweda is derived from Sanskrit swid, meaning 'to sweat or to perspire'. So swedana is the process of inducing sweat with the help of steam, generated from medicated herbal decoctions.It is the pre-operative procedure in various Ayurvedic detox therapies where the objective is to dilate the channels of the body to detach the toxins from the tissues. Ayurvedic fomentation is usually given after an oil massage. There are many different varities of Swedana. Some of them are as follows: Bashpa Sweda: The fomentation is done by making the person to sit in the chamber where steam emanates from boiling herbal decoction. Naadi Sweda: Naadi sweda is penetrating heat. It is a more penetrating type of wet heat than Bashpa Sweda. This is given to whole body, using a tube; importance is given to thick and complex structures of joints.

    The phrase Greeva Basti is from Sanskrit. The word Greeva refers to neck and Basti stands for container or retaining something inside. It is an Ayurvedic neck care and basically a hot oil therapy. Greeva Basti is bathing the neck region with medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. The procedure does oleation and sudation around the neck region simultaneously. Due to present day lifestyle which involves continued and glued sitting position and lack of body movements the problems of the spine, muscles and skeletal tissues of neck and shoulder arise. Greeva Basti addresses these issues effectively.

    Hrid Basti or Uro Basti

So Hrid Basti is an oil bath on the heart. This suggests an Ayurvedic hot oil treatment where the medicated hot oil preparation or freshly prepared herbal decoction is poured over the heart region. Hridaya, the heart is considered as one among the trimarma(three vital areas) measuring about four fingers (four anguli pramana), covering heart, middle of sternum. This procedure is bathing the heart region using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions or medicated ghee depending on the condition.
